About Marlow and Little Marlow

Marlow Bridge
Suspension bridge,
designed by William Tierney Clark in 1832.

The Barn at the Old Cottage, both B&B and/or holiday let, is situated very conveniently a few strides from both the King's Head and Queen's Head pubs. The bank of the River Thames is only about 600 yards away on foot and then onto a beautiful circular walk at parts teeming with wild bird life and stunning views over the Thames Valley.

As Little Marlow is situated only a mile from the outskirts of Marlow it is possible to talk about the two villages in the same breath.

Little Marlow is located on the north bank of the River Thames. The village name ‘Marlow’ is of Anglo Saxon derivation, and means ‘land remaining after the draining of a pool’. In 1015 it was recorded as Merelafan. Little Marlow was once the site of a Benedictine convent dedicated to the Virgin Mary which was seized by the Crown in the Dissolution of the Monasteries and was eventually demolished in 1740 but the remains can still be seen today.

A short drive, or a pleasant walk, away is the “village” of Marlow. Much larger in size than its namesake, Marlow sports many restaurants, pubs, boutiques and bustles with activity. Marlow is famed for its past residents including the poet Shelley, Jerome K, Jerome (Three Men in a Boat), Mary Shelley (Frankenstein) and more recently home to Sir Steven Redgrave, winner of 5 gold medals in consecutive Olympics.

A favourite point for viewing the River Thames and its scenery including the weir and the Compleat Angler Hotel is from the historic suspension bridge.

Of course, Marlow has a large business and commercial centre at Globe Park, close to the A404 bypass. It's an easy run to there for visitors to our bed and breakfast/holiday let accommodation.
